When I was a little girl (child of the 80’s) I loved my Cabbage Patch Dolls. Of course, my poor parents and grandmother had to wait in lines and battle other parents for the dolls. I can’t remember but I think I had five or six of them. I packed them away years ago but they are long lost in a garage somewhere with no hope of their return to me. I do have one boy doll, I think his name is Christopher Andrew, and he has the champagne blonde hair. My first CPK was a little bald preemie named Jamie Ursa. I loved her so much, and slept with her for years. I still have her dress, but that is all that remains of little Jamie.
Now years later I am 35 years old and I have a 6 month old daughter! Oh joy at the toys I get to buy her, the things I didn’t have. She brings me so much happiness. I think about my Mother and Grandmother having to go through hassles to get me these dolls, and I didn’t get to pick any of them out because it was so hard to get one. I didn’t even get the type I wanted, but I still adored them.
So recently I have been hitting the thrift store, and in the pile of tattered dolls they have there, I noticed some Cabbage Patch Dolls. Of course you can’t miss their little feet. Most of them were missing clothing, and had stains and tattered hair. But the day after I noticed these dolls I couldn’t stop thinking about them. They were $3 each! My Mom and Grandma paid at least $50 each for them back in the day. And here these little dolls were lying in a pile of unwanted baby dolls. I soon went back, and all of the half dozen CPKs I first saw were gone. But there were others. Not as cute, but it let me know they get more in all the time. Now everytime I go I hit the doll pile and look for Cabbage Patch Dolls. So far I have brought home two.
The first doll I bought is the type with cornsilk hair, plastic like a barbie doll. She is a light blonde with tight curly hair in pigtails, and greenish blue eyes. She is adorable! Unfortunately, they put a price tag on her face and then drew on the price with a black permanent marker, and a little mark off the edge is on her cheek. I’ve researched online how to get rid of this and it seems a lot of people restore these cute Cabbage Patch Dolls. I tried all the tricks; rubbing alcohol, mr clean magic eraser, and a little comet. None of these worked. It seems that you can use Oxy pimple cream and leave the doll in the sun all day, and it will bleach the spots out. You can do this several times over a week I have read, and it will get the stains out. I think I will try it. The second doll has dark brown yarn hair and brown eyes. Her hair is in a single ponytail, and she has one dimple. Her face had a little dirt on it, but it easily cleaned up. She is a cutie!
So I took both dolls, and got them ready for the washing machine. I didn’t want the little curly blonde’s hair to get frizzed out, so I took a pair of pantyhose and pulled them over her head. I put each doll in a cotton pillowcase, and tied the end. I put them through a short cool wash cycle, and let them spin dry. When I took them out, I discovered that the doll with the cornsilk hair had water in her head. Oops! Well it seemed to drain, but I wouldn’t want mold growing in her head so I will probably stick to buying the yarn hair dolls.
I hung them both up to dry outside. I tied them with the pantyhose and hung them on a plant hanger, so they got a nice airing out. The brunette doll dried really quick, but the other one took a little longer due to the water in her head. Then it was time to find some clothes for them.
I got out my old suitcase of doll clothes that I still have from my childhood. I have a few items of CPK clothes, but most of them aren’t in the best shape. The best item is a pair of dark blue demin jeans that doesn’t have much elastic left, but are still in good condition. The blonde doll came with a cute little top and vest, and the brunette doll had on tights and two shoes which cleaned up nicely. This top and vest went great with the jeans. So I dressed up the brunette. I used some of the newborn pampers I had leftover from my daughter who is now in size 2 diapers. She has also grown out of tons of clothes already, so I went digging in her baby dresser. I found a cute pink pair of newborn pants and a cute little white with pink flowered onesie which she wore once it was pretty small. This made a cute outfit for the blonde doll. What I need is some socks for both, and another pair of shoes and they are both ready for playtime. There are lots of places online you can buy Cabbage Patch Doll dresses and clothes. I do need to add some stitching on the blonde doll’s hand, and they are ready to go.

I will continue to look for more dolls now that I see how to restore these cute baby dolls. My daughter already loves them. More to come.
